The Hamakua District, a lush region with plentiful rainfall and a geographic make up that is dominated by a series of river gulchs and valleys that are separated by ridges that support a range of agricultural operations ranging from small vegetable farms to massive tracks of commercial lumber. Waipio Valley’s stunning thousand foot waterfalls, steep cliffs and beautiful black sand beach is a place of unparalleled tropical beauty. Once the site of a large Hawaiian settlement, the Valley currently is home to a small number of Taro farmers and homesteaders. The breathtaking drive along the Hamakua Coast passes through several small plantation towns and provides scenic vistas and an atmosphere that recalls Hawaii's not too distant plantation past.
