Hamakua Hotspots
Honokaa town, the largest of the small plantation towns of the
Hamakua Coast, is the site of the first macadamia nut plantation
in Hawaii and macadamia nuts are still in an important crop in this
region. Large-scale sugar production dominated the region in
the early to mid-1900s resulting in increasing population and the
construction of many of the town's historic buildings. The
wonderful plantation architecture coupled with funky shops,
boutiques, and restaurants make a visit to Honokaa town an experience
not to be missed.
Honokaa town is located just off Hwy 19 on the
road to Waipio Valley.
