| Japanese - International Festival |
Since Japanese culture is so prevalent in Hilo and the surrounding
areas, the International Festival recognizes and commemorates the
Japanese role in Hawaiian culture. Most of the festivities
are located less then 1 mile from Naniloa Volcanoes Resort on Banyan
Dr. and in Liliuokalani Park. With an exotic Lantern Parade,
authentic foods, craft demonstrations, contests, and live music,
this is a celebration not to be missed. The most noteworthy
event is the Japanese tea ceremony, called Uraksenke, held at Liliuokalani
Park in the Tea House. This genuine tea house is only open
a few times during the year and is a must see when accessible. Events
are presented throughout the year, with the main celebration occurring
in early August. Admission to all events is free.
