The vast scenic vistas and rich environmental diversity of the Kau District encompasses verdant forests and farms at the higher elevations, the parched Kau Desert, and an unspoiled coastline adorned with rugged volcanic outcroppings that protect beautiful black, white, and greensand beaches. Ringed with palm trees, Punaluu black sand beach is a spot of intoxicating beauty and a great place for swimming, snorkeling and watching the endangered green sea turtles that congregate in the area. The former sugarcane towns of Pahala and Na'alehu now cater to visitors and resident farmers and offer a bounty of agricultural products as well as small shops, restaurants, bakeries and coffee shops. The majority of Hawaii volcanoes national Park is located in the Kau District including the historic Volcano House which is built overlooking the steaming Kiluea Crater and offers one-of-a-kind accommodations.
