With 250,000 rolling acres, Parker Ranch is one of the US’s
largest privately owned cattle ranches. Parker Ranch was established
by John Palmer Parker and his wife, Princess Kipikane (King Kamehameha
I’s grand-daughter) in 1847. Cowboys form Mexico and South
America were brought in as ranch hands. As a new group of Hawaiian
cowboy learned skills, the word paniolo which means cowboy was added
to the Hawaiian vocabulary. Festive rodeos are still periodically
hosted by the ranch.
