ALL ABOUT HAWAII

Hotspots >

The Kona District, encompassing the leeward slopes of Mauna Loa and Hualalai volcanoes, includes diverse climates ranging from lush up slope forests and coffee plantations to sunny coastal areas. Kona town, the largest town on the West Side of the Big Island features several resorts, lots of interesting restaurants and shops, and is known as the center of billfish fishing in Hawaii. Kona and the surrounding area are now focused on tourism and coffee production, but in ancient times, Kona was a focal point for Hawaiian cultural practices and is the site of the City of Refuge National Monument (Puuhonua O Honaunau), Kealakekua Bay where Captain Cook was killed and historic Hulihee Palace.
