ALL ABOUT HAWAII

Hotspots >

Located on the slopes of Mauna Loa and Kiliuea volcanoes the rural, sparsely populated, sprawling Puna District is home to lush Ohia forests, geothermal springs, black sand beaches and active flows of molten lava. The site of recent lava flows that in 1990 destroyed the town of Kalapana, the Puna District is second to none for awesome displays of the beauty and power of Mother nature and Madame Pele. Historic Pahoa town provides a frontier atmosphere, historic buildings, interesting shops and it is a great spot to observe the eclectic mix of homesteaders and local characters who have carved livelihoods out of the surrounding rain forest growing anthiriums, orchids, macadamia nuts and other agricultural products.
