This simple lighthouse constructed to warn fishing boats of the
location of Cape Kumukahi is situated 1 1/2 miles east of the intersection
of Hwy 130 and Hwy 137. In 1960 lava flow that destroyed the nearby
town of Kapoho seemingly defied logic and spared the lighthouse by
flowing around the lighthouse while destroying all other structures
in the area. Legend holds that Pele, the volcano goddess, spared
the lighthouse to protect local fishermen. The area offers great
vistas of the surrounding coconut tree lined Coast.
