The walk out to Pu’u Loa Petroglyphs takes 1.5 hours. The
trail traverse lava flows to this extensive and well preserved petroglyph
field. Petroglyph is an ancient Hawaiian art form that was often
etched into stone and was used to communicate about events, reflect
lifestyle, and mark boundaries and trails. The Big Island has the
largest concentration of this ancient art form in the state and Hawaii
Volcanoes National Park is the best place in the state to see them.
